And now this!”He moved towards her, but stopped. He could not bear his own longing. He had loved her for twenty years. Then again, he had loved his wife for twenty years, too. The one whose eyes were deep midnight black on page 182 and blue, blue on pages 156 and 235 and black again on page 357. The thought of her eyes left him confused and filled with longing but he had stuck it out for twenty years.“You don’t have to finish it,” he whispered softly.Her eyes filled. “Blake would expect me to,” she murmured, as a single tear slid slowly down her cheek. This was a different single tear than the one that had slid down her cheek an hour ago.His voice trembled with unspoken emotion. “He left you...”“After twenty years!” she finished, in an agony of grief, memories, and lost family. I loved The Nightingale and enjoyed The Four Winds. Hannah is an excellent writer but this was just too much. It seems to have been hastily written with endless repetition and very poor editing. Characters that had some gumption and that could have been expanded to add real contrast were only accent pieces, and we were left with boring Annie. It should have been at least a hundred pages shorter. I suggest you not waste four hours of your life reading this book. It will seem like twenty years. I have read a few other of this author's books and liked them - This is not a romantic erotica book as stated in the description...there is no explicit sex at all.....That being said, there were components of this book that I liked and that I disliked.....We found out that Annie's husband is a cheating rat and a selfish jackass....She goes back to her childhood home and finds peace and new meaning to her life in helping her first love and his small daughter through the grief of losing their wife/mother months before.....SPOILER ALERT! The fact that this author made the husband her new baby's father ruined this story for me....It could have easily been Nick's and should have been....The ending was so abrupt I was shocked actually....All of a sudden it ended without a real ending....EPILOGUE ENDING IT PROPERLY PLEASE!!!!!! I felt cheated and disappointed......
